Legal assistance and identity theft coverage is an additional measure of support for our customers that provides expert legal advice on a wide range of legal matters including employment law, income security, landlord and tenant issues. Additionally, the coverage can help you to restore your identity in the event it is stolen and can provide funds to cover expenses that you may incur while doing so.

Legal Expense

Reimbursement of lawyer’s fees to resolve covered disputes

Legal Expense coverage will reimburse you for lawyer’s fees to resolve covered disputes. Have peace of mind that assistance is available if you are faced with legal issues.

Benefits

You will not be charged a deductible for asking legal questions or seeking legal advice under our Legal Expense coverage.  However,  if you claim for reimbursement of expenses for a covered dispute, a minimum threshold reimbursement amount may apply.

Steps to take

  1. Call the toll-free number 1-877-866-8699. Coverage will be confirmed and the caller will be transferred to an on-line lawyer for an initial consultation
  2. On-line lawyer will:
    1. Assist customer by answering questions
    2. Conduct any research necessary to provide direction to customer
    3. Document all details of conversation
    4. Determine if the issue or dispute is covered
  3. If the issue or dispute is covered, customer will be directed to hire a lawyer of his/her choice to represent them

The hired lawyer will represent the customer and manage the issue or dispute. An invoice will be submitted to us for reimbursement of the covered lawyer’s fees.

What is Identity Theft?

“Identity theft” is the unauthorized collection or use of someone else’s personal information without their consent or in a fraudulent manner, for economic gain or other purposes.

Common signs your identity may have been stolen

  • No longer receive credit card statements or not all of your mail is being delivered
  • Receive credit card statements for accounts you did not open or purchases you did not make
  • Informed that you are approved or turned down for credit for which you did not apply
  • Check your credit report with Equifax and notice activity that you did not initiate on your record

Reimbursement of Expenses to

  • Defend lawsuits from businesses or collections agencies
  • Take action to remove any judgements wrongly entered against an insured as a direct result of the identity theft

Steps to take

  1. Insured calls toll-free number 1-877-866-8699 and speaks to an on-line lawyer
  2. On-line lawyer will:
    1. Identify nature of fraud
    2. Educate customer on process
    3. Assist with gathering and completing paperwork
    4. Assist customer in contacting credit lenders to place an identity theft warning
  3. On-line lawyer will send an “ID Theft Tool Kit” to the customer which contains:
    1. List of important contacts
    2. “What to do” instructions
    3. Full instructions including Identity Theft Statement
    4. On-line lawyer will continue to assist customer as they work through  the process
  4. If matter cannot be resolved with on-line lawyer, customer will be directed to hire a lawyer of his/her choice to assist further in the process
  5. On-line lawyer will continue to assist customer and their lawyer until the matter is resolved

I don’t have a homeowner’s policy; can I still use this temporary service?

Yes, this service is available from May 1, 2020 to August 31, 2020 to all customers with an active policy with us between May 1, 2020 and August 31, 2020, regardless of the type of policy you have with us.

I noticed that I already have this coverage and I am paying for it, will I be reimbursed?

No. As part of our Covid-19 pandemic relief measures, we are making this coverage temporarily available to all of our customers for the time period of May 1 to August 31, 2020 only.  Your coverage will continue to be available to you for the duration of your Comprehensive Home Owners policy (approximately 12 months in total).

Do I pay a deductible to use this coverage?

You will not be charged a deductible for asking legal questions or seeking legal advice under our Identity Theft and Legal Expense coverage. 

How soon can I use this service? Is there a waiting period?

There is normally a 60-day waiting period associated with this coverage; however, given the current extraordinary circumstances we have eliminated the waiting period so that our customers can get legal advice as quickly as possible. As a result, this service is available to you from May 1, 2020 to August 31, 2020.

How often can I use this service?

There are no limits on how often you can use the service.
